Senior Counsel Paul Muite and former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi have issued a bold warning to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, threatening legal action over the recent rise in abductions in Kenya.
According to Havi, if swift action isn’t taken to address the issue, Murkomen could face severe legal and political consequences.
Havi, known for his unwavering stance on human rights, revealed he has the backing of prominent legal minds, including Paul Muite, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, and others.
In a post on X, Havi urged Murkomen to secure the release of abductees, saying, “CS Murkomen, you know we can sign a statement and end your career. Have the three men released immediately.”
This isn’t the first time Havi and his allies have challenged authorities on abduction cases. Recalling a previous case, Havi shared how they pressured Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli into releasing three individuals detained for over a month without explanation.
“We filed a petition, went to court, and succeeded. We’ll do it again if necessary,” he stated.
Paul Muite also voiced his support for filing habeas corpus petitions—a legal move demanding abductees be presented in court. He emphasized the need to stand against constitutional violations, declaring, “We must not normalize this impunity.”
The situation has drawn widespread concern, with other senior counsels, politicians, and activists condemning the abductions. Former LSK President Eric Theuri highlighted the emotional toll on families, recounting a conversation with the father of abductee Billy Mwangi, whose mother fell ill following his disappearance.
While investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) are underway, no legal action has been taken against Murkomen or the National Police Service. Pressure continues to mount, with citizens demanding accountability and justice.
