A land fraud case involving Senator Gloria Orwoba has emerged, placing her under public scrutiny.

Lydia Wangui, a long-time friend of the senator, alleges she was defrauded Ksh 900,000 in a land deal that turned sour.

The friendship between the two dates back to high school and strengthened during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Boniface Mwangi post on X on October 5, Lydia claims Gloria introduced her to Reuben Yego and Eric Agbeko, business partners allegedly selling sub-divided plots in Syokimau. Trusting Gloria, Lydia paid Reuben the money in December 2020.

After receiving a sale agreement and a Land Reference (LR) number, Lydia expected her plot. However, repeated follow-ups yielded nothing.

Realizing she was conned, Lydia reported the case to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Mlolongo Police Station.

Despite paying a facilitation fee of Ksh 10,000, police efforts to resolve the matter were unsuccessful. Lydia later discovered that Eric Agbeko, a Ghanaian national, had multiple land-related court cases.

Lydia’s attempts to recover her money strained her relationship with Gloria. The senator allegedly asked Lydia to drop the matter and cut ties, leaving Lydia convinced she would never see her money again.

The scandal raises questions about Gloria Orwoba’s involvement and casts a shadow over her political career.

Yesterday, the nominated senator triggered backlash from Kenyans after she suggested that the government should regulate or even ban X (formerly Twitter) to curb misinformation. Senator Orwoba argued that misleading information on social media has unfairly fueled public outrage against the government.

She cited the looming impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as an example, claiming that social media had portrayed Gachagua as a saint, whereas evidence shows he has grossly violated the Constitution of Kenya (CoK).

Public reaction has been swift, with many Kenyans criticising the senator’s proposal as an attempt to stifle free speech. Further investigations into the land fraud casea re ongoing.
