President William Ruto’s economic advisor, Dr. David Ndii, has sparked controversy by dismissing Kenyans’ complaints about the Finance Bill 2024 on social media.
Via his Twitter handle, Ndii likened digital activism to “wanking,” suggesting it was futile and ineffective.
“Politics is a contact sport. Digital activism is just wanking. Any jackass can kick down a barn but it takes a good carpenter to build one,” Angry David Ndii fired missile via his Twitter account on June 14.
However, David Ndii’s comments comes hours after Members of Parliament (MPs) from both the National Assembly and the Senate faced overwhelming pressure from the public.
Thousands of Kenyans bombarded MPs’ phones with messages and calls, urging them to reject the Finance Bill 2024. The proposed legislation has been met with significant opposition, particularly due to new taxes on essential items such as sanitary pads and diapers.
Also, President William Ruto, during a tour in Meru yesterday, also addressed the controversy. He urged Kenyans to avoid being misled by wealthy individuals who oppose the Finance Bill for their own interests.
All the same, many Kenyans have remained unconvinced, arguing that while the government is taxing them heavily, they do not see the benefits of their contributions.
The Finance Bill 2024 is set to be debated in Parliament next week. MPs will deliberate on the proposed measures and potentially vote to either adopt or reject the bill. The outcome will have significant implications for the country’s economic landscape and the everyday lives of its citizens.
National Assembly Majority leader Hon Kimani Ichungwa who doubles as Kikuyu MP and his counterpart in South Mugirango Hon Silvanus Osoro who is the Majority Chief Whip in the National Assembly are among MPs who had a tough day yesterday when Kenyans decided to take it too far by warning MPs of untold and endless political effects should any of them dare or even dream of passing the Finance Bill 2024.
