The death of a senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer in Nyamira has sparked investigations after he was found dead inside his official residence under circumstances that police have described as suspicious.

The officer, identified as David Kipkoech Kosgey, 56, was discovered lifeless at his house in Nyamira town on Friday, June 5. Authorities say concerns arose after he failed to respond to calls and could not be reached by colleagues despite being expected to travel to Nairobi for official duties.

According to police reports, junior officers became worried when repeated attempts to contact him proved unsuccessful. Their concern grew as the time for his scheduled assignment approached. The officers later went to his residence to check on him, only to find the house locked from the inside.

After several unsuccessful attempts to gain access, they were forced to break down the door. Inside, they found Kosgey’s body lying in the house. Police officers who responded to the scene immediately began documenting the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators noted that there were blood stains believed to have resulted from vomiting blood. However, officers reported that the body did not show any visible physical injuries.

Early observations at the scene also suggested there could have been signs of a struggle before his death, although detectives have not yet confirmed what exactly took place.

The incident was confirmed by Nyamira County Commissioner Benson Leparimorijo, who said Kosgey served as the head of County Intelligence Coordination. He stated that the body was discovered at around midday after concerns over the officer’s whereabouts intensified.

Leparimorijo also confirmed that the residence had been locked from the inside, forcing officers to break in to establish what had happened. Following the discovery, detectives secured the scene and began gathering evidence as part of ongoing investigations.

Kosgey’s body was later moved to Nyamira Level 5 Mortuary, where it will remain pending a postmortem examination. The results are expected to help investigators establish the exact cause of death and determine whether any criminal activity was involved.

The house has since been marked as a crime scene as detectives continue their inquiries.

By Friday evening, no arrests had been made, and authorities had not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death.

Investigations remain ongoing as officers work to establish what led to the senior intelligence officer’s death.
