Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo has denied any role in the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi who was assaulted by goons at a Kisumu restaurant earlier this week.
Speaking at a press engagement Omollo said the allegations against him were baseless and that he had no knowledge of who carried out the attack.
“I do not know who has been nabbed and I do not know who has been involved,” he said firmly. He called for investigations to proceed without any political interference from any quarter.
Omollo admitted that political thuggery has become a serious problem in Kenya. He pointed to similar incidents in Kisumu and Turkana counties where hired goons have broken up public gatherings and terrorized ordinary citizens.
He promised that security agencies would act decisively to restore public order and confidence.
While vowing swift action against those who attacked Osotsi the PS also warned that his office would pursue anyone from Osotsi’s camp linked to counter-attacks or provocations against government officials. He made it clear that retaliatory violence would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Omollo also addressed the youth directly urging students and young people to reject recruitment by politicians who use them as tools of violence. He called on parents teachers and community leaders to protect young people from dangerous political influences that derail their futures.
The attack on Senator Osotsi which was captured on CCTV has caused public outrage. Opposition leaders have demanded Omollo’s resignation accusing his office of orchestrating political intimidation ahead of key by-elections. The widely circulated footage has deepened tensions across the country.
Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the Kisumu incident. Omollo however said he remained uninformed about specific arrests to allow independent investigations to run their course without interference.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is expected to release a detailed update on the case in the coming days.
