At least six prominent figures are being considered to succeed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his impeachment by the National Assembly.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has emerged as the frontrunner, with Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, and Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome also in the race for the coveted position.
According to reports by The Standard, Gachagua’s impeachment has set off intense political maneuvers, with key political players positioning themselves for the Deputy President seat.
The Senate has officially commenced the trial following the National Assembly’s vote, and should the Senate uphold the decision, President William Ruto will have just 14 days to nominate a new Deputy President, a process that will require approval by Parliament.
Leading the pack is Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, whose leadership and integrity have been praised. Political analysts, including Barrack Muluka, believe Kindiki’s strong record in the Interior Ministry and his previous consideration for the Deputy President slot in 2022 put him in a favorable position.
However, others argue that despite his merits, Kindiki may not bring the necessary political arithmetic to help President Ruto in the 2027 elections, with suggestions that a running mate from Western Kenya could be more strategic.
The other contenders bring varying degrees of political clout. Kimani Ichung’wah, who spearheaded Gachagua’s impeachment, has demonstrated loyalty to the President, while Anne Waiguru’s experience as Council of Governors chairwoman makes her a viable candidate.
Irungu Kang’ata, with his focus on county matters, could appeal due to his non-confrontational style. Mwangi Kiunjuri and Ndindi Nyoro, while independent-minded, could face challenges in rallying support. Alice Wahome’s current government role may also hinder her political influence.
As the Senate trial continues, the political dynamics and electoral calculations will play a crucial role in determining who will step into Gachagua’s shoes if the impeachment is upheld.
