The government has refuted claims surrounding Peter Mbae’s resignation as the Head of the Government Delivery Unit (GDU).
In a statement released today, January 13, 2025, the government clarified that Mbae’s exit was not a resignation but a result of the Cabinet’s dissolution on July 11, 2024.
According to the statement, Mbae ceased being a GDU employee following the removal of then Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria.
“Peter Mbae’s tenure ended on July 11, 2024, when the Cabinet was dissolved. A formal notification regarding the termination of his contract was issued on July 24, 2024, by the then Principal Secretary for Performance and Delivery Management,” the statement read.
The GDU also revealed that Lee Kyonze has been serving as the acting head of the unit since July 12, 2024.
However, Mbae disputed the government’s claims, asserting that he resigned today, January 13, through a letter addressed to the Chief of Staff.
He cited unresolved issues within the unit that rendered his position untenable. “Despite my passion and consistency, challenges that I had consistently raised were never resolved, making it impossible to effectively execute my duties,” Mbae stated.
He added that his resignation letter was specifically addressed to the Chief of Staff, as only that office had the authority to handle his concerns.
Mbae’s claims contradict the official narrative and have sparked widespread debate about internal government operations.
His resignation letter has drawn attention to deeper systemic challenges within the GDU, with Mbae insisting his decision was a stand for accountability.
As the controversy unfolds, questions remain over the true circumstances of Mbae’s departure and its implications for government transparency.
