Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has now admitted that not even Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga can decide who succeeds him as the next Luo kingpin.
This comes at a time when the former Prime Minister, who is his younger brother, appears to be approaching his exit from active politics, thanks to his age and five unsuccessful presidential bids.
Oburu now says that it is not upon Raila to choose whom he leaves behind as the leader of the Luo people when his time to take a leave comes.
The politician says that rather, it is the Luo people themselves who will make the decision, admitting that there are many people qualified for the job.
The Ex Bondo Member of Parliament has made the remarks while denying endorsing Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi and clarifying that he only included him in the list of the leading contenders.
“I only said that leaders emerge. And so leaders like Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi have emerged,” he told People Daily in an interview in Kisumu.
This comes a day after Wandayi said that while he welcomes Oburu seeing something unique in his leadership, he has never aspired to be a tribal kingpin.
The National Assembly Minority Leader also noted that he is not involved in any race for the leadership of the Luo community.
“I have never aspired to be an ethnic community leader even as I take great pride in being Luo. Even as the leader of Azimio troops in the National Assembly, I consider myself as simply first among equals, but I respect Oburu’s freedoms of thought and expression. I also appreciate his confidence in my leadership capabilities,” the told the Daily Nation on Monday.
