Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has made a bold comeback to the political scene by acquiring the Umoja na Maendeleo Party.

After being impeached earlier this year, this move seems to be her strategy to remain politically active.

She has now taken over the leadership of the party and placed her close family members in top positions, a decision that has triggered a debate across the country.

Mwangaza appointed herself as the Interim Party Leader, her husband Murega Baichu as Interim Secretary-General, her son Victor Koome as Deputy Party Leader, and her sister Miriam Karwirwa as Interim National Chairperson.

Also in the new leadership is Harisson Gatobu, her former Chief of Staff, now named Executive Director. The party’s new headquarters is based at Kamuketha village in Meru, where Mwangaza’s home and ranch are located.

This development follows her fallout with the United Democratic Alliance, the party she had joined after winning the Meru gubernatorial seat in 2022.

She now accuses UDA of abandoning her during her impeachment and is taking matters into her own hands by leading a new party with full control.

Mwangaza has openly stated that her impeachment was pushed by rivals such as Kiraitu Murungi, Peter Munya, and Mpuru Aburi. She blames them for plotting against her, and her new mission with the party is partly aimed at settling political scores.

Her first plan of action is to field candidates in upcoming by-elections, starting with Mbeere North Constituency in Embu County. This shows that she is not just focused on Meru politics but is targeting a wider influence.

However, her decision to put family members in charge has attracted both support and criticism. Some supporters see this as loyalty and family unity, especially after her family stood by her during her impeachment.

Others see it as pure nepotism and question the qualifications and fairness of such appointments.

Social media users have shared mixed views, with some praising her trust in family, while others accuse her of selfish leadership. The fact that her husband was also involved in previous controversial appointments when she was governor adds fuel to the debate.

Despite the backlash, Mwangaza seems determined to move forward. She is now building a new political base with people she trusts most. Whether Kenyans will support her party or reject it due to the family focus remains to be seen, but her intention to stay relevant in politics is now very clear.
