Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is rapidly building a reputation not as a leader, but as a walking crime scene—a figurehead for corruption, incompetence, and mismanagement that is leaving Nairobi residents and workers stranded in a sea of uncertainty.

Latest allegations surrounding his handling of KSh 20 million meant for uniforms for over 1,000 city inspectorate officers have raised more than a few eyebrows, particularly regarding where the funds actually went.

Sakaja, who was entrusted with managing the affairs of Nairobi County, has reportedly diverted the funds that were allocated to ensure the new recruits would receive proper uniforms.

These uniforms were necessary for their graduation and official commissioning, yet the recruits are now left without graduation, without the necessary official pass-out parade, and, shockingly, without the legal foundation to even perform their duties.

The recruits are effectively operating without a legal basis for their work, risking their own safety as well as the lawlessness of their operations.

But it doesn’t stop there. The funds intended to buy uniforms were reportedly funneled into paying lawyers instead an outrageous and scandalous misuse of public money that should have gone to securing the future of these new recruits.

The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee has demanded an investigation, and committee members are not shy about expressing their concerns regarding Sakaja’s gross negligence.

As if this wasn’t enough, Sakaja’s corruption seems to be a trend rather than an isolated incident.

Earlier this year, his administration faced questions over KSh 140 million intended for the Dishi na County school feeding program.

The French government donated the funds, but instead of being used to feed children as intended, they were reportedly transferred directly into the account of a third-party organization, without proper accountability.

Sakaja’s mismanagement extends beyond funds and into his treatment of Nairobi’s public service.

His office’s failure to deliver on promises, neglect of public welfare, and outright corruption paint a bleak picture of a man more concerned with lining his pockets than securing the safety and wellbeing of his constituents.

It is clear that, under his leadership, Nairobi is not a city of progress but a city sinking into bureaucratic incompetence and corruption.
