Former Chief Justice David Maraga has raised the alarm over the sudden withdrawal of his security by the Kenya Kwanza administration.

In a post made on his official X account, Maraga shared that the decision was made shortly after he joined the Gen Z-led protests against President William Ruto’s government.

The former CJ posted a brief message accompanied by an official letter to the Inspector General of Police and the Interior Cabinet Secretary, confirming that the government had removed security officers who were legally assigned to him. This action has sparked outrage and further exposed the government’s harsh response to dissent.

The move to withdraw Maraga’s security raises serious questions about the intentions of Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

Both men now stand accused of using state machinery to punish political opponents and suppress voices critical of the regime. Instead of respecting the rule of law and protecting public servants who served the nation honorably, the government appears to be targeting them simply because they stand with the people.

Maraga’s support for the Gen Z movement was a bold step, and many Kenyans applauded his bravery. By marching with citizens, especially the youth, he showed solidarity with the frustrations of the people.

The protests were a cry against bad governance, high taxes, and increasing oppression, yet instead of listening to the demands, the state chose to retaliate. The timing of the security withdrawal speaks volumes. It is no coincidence that just a day after appearing at the protests, Maraga’s guards were recalled. This is a clear act of intimidation.

Murkomen and Kanja must be held accountable for turning their offices into political weapons. Security is not a personal favour. It is a right under the law, especially for someone like Maraga who held the highest judicial office in the land.

Denying him protection endangers his life and sets a dangerous precedent. Today it is Maraga. Tomorrow it could be any other retired official or citizen speaking out against injustice.

Maraga has also declared his ambition to challenge Ruto in 2027, a move that is gaining traction among citizens. The withdrawal of his security now looks like a political move to scare him and derail his growing popularity.

But this kind of state harassment will only make more people rally behind him. If the Ruto administration believes in democracy, then it must stop this kind of targeted punishment.

It now remains to be seen whether the government will respond to Maraga’s letter and restore his security. But even if they don’t, Kenyans have already seen the face of intolerance and abuse of power.

Maraga’s courage in standing with the people must be respected, and any attempt to silence him must be condemned. The actions by Kipchumba Murkomen and Douglas Kanja are shameful and dangerous for a country that claims to uphold democracy and justice.
