The presidential flag-bearer of the Safina party Jimi Wanjigi has had his application to run for the presidency rejected by the IEBC. The businessman’s dream to contest for presidency in the upcoming August general election is no longer a reality.

IEBC rejected Wanjigi’s nomination citing that the Safina Party leader didn’t have a university degree. The chairman of IEBC Mr Wafula Chebukati stated that he could not proceed to clear Wanjigi because he did not have the required qualifications.

Mr Wafula Chebukati stated,

“Degree certificate is mandatory and due to that, I am rejecting your application to be nominated as a candidate for presidential election slated for August 9, this year. That is my decision as the returning officer for presidential elections.”

Jimi Wanjigi stated that the move was meant to lock him out of contesting for the top seat in the forthcoming general elections. He stated that there was a huge elimination process that was being carried out somewhere with the intention of barring him for contesting for presidency.

He stated that the rules that were applied to him didn’t apply to other candidates who have already been cleared by the board. He stated that the motive is unjust, and that he fears for the upcoming election.

The Safina Party team stated that Walter Mong’are has been cleared yet he had similar issues. Jimi Wanjigi dared the commission to address the clearance of Walter Mong’are who had similar issues. Jimi Wanjigi and his team stated that they had come with all the key documents and therefore, he should have been cleared.
