Former Equity Bank corporate executive and Azimio – One Kenya gubernatorial hopeful Polycap Igathe has been dealt a huge blow after a petitioner, Geroge Bush, filed a case with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Disputes Resolutions Committee seeking to revoke his (Igathe) clearance certificate for Nairobi gubernatorial contest. Fresh tears!
According to Bush, Igathe ‘resigned’ from the deputy governor position in January 2018 during the reign of embattled former governor Mike Sonko.
Bush argued that Igathe failed to execute his duties in the capacity of the county’s second in command and therefore, lacks the integrity and is untrustworthy to lead the city.
“Igathe having been duly elected the deputy governor of Nairobi City County in the 2017 general election, deliberately refused to execute the duties of the office, abdicate his office and eventually walked out of office never to return again without even tendering his resignation. What followed was an unprecedented constitutional crisis and suffering for the great people of Nairobi county, ” Bush states in his complaint with IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee.
Igathe resigned in 2018 citing incapability to work with ex-governor Mike Sonko.
He was cleared by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to vie for Nairobi seat on Jubilee party ticket, housed under Azimio – One Kenya.
The case is set to be heard tomorrow, Monday, 12th June 2022.
Kenya Kwanza Alliance candidate Johnson Sakaja of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is also facing a similar political hurdle after a voter dislodged a petition at the commission’s Disputes Resolutions Committee seeking to disqualify him from the contest over claims that he forged the university degree from The University in Uganda.
Wahome argued that Sakaja procured the aforesaid degree illegally since his name doesn’t feature on the list of graduands of 2016 as indicated in the degree.
Independent Candidate Agnes Kagure was also cleared to vie for the seat.
