Erling Haaland has scored four goals, leading Manchester City to a 5-1 thrashing of Wolves at the Etihad. This victory brings City within three games of an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Despite the pressure, City showed resilience, cutting the gap back to one point with three matches remaining compared to Arsenal’s two. Haaland, who faced criticism for not matching his first season’s standards, silenced critics by taking his season’s tally to 36 goals in 41 appearances.
Restored to Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up after scoring against Nottingham Forest last weekend, Haaland was in top form. Wolves, who had inflicted one of City’s three Premier League defeats this season, were blown away as Guardiola’s men extended their unbeaten home streak to 43 games.
Haaland converted two first-half penalties, opening the floodgates for City. He then powered home a header from Rodri’s cross, and despite a VAR review, completed his hat-trick in first-half stoppage time.
Wolves pulled a goal back early in the second period, but City’s three-goal cushion was quickly restored. Phil Foden’s long ball picked out Haaland, who cut onto his lethal left foot and found the top corner.
Haaland’s four-goal haul puts him in pole position for the Golden Boot, with his 25 Premier League goals now five more than Alexander Isak and Cole Palmer. Despite a spectacular save from Wolves’ Jose Sa, Haaland could have had more.
City, now unbeaten in 19 Premier League games, will travel to Fulham and Tottenham in their next two games before hosting West Ham on the final day of the season. Arsenal must hope for another twist in the title race to end their 20-year wait to win the league. However, City shows no signs of slipping up in their quest to become the first side to ever win four consecutive English top-flight titles.
