Once a vocal critic of the Gen Z generation, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi has now made a profound about-turn, calling for prayers and understanding for young people in Kenya.

Last year, at the height of youth-led protests against poor governance, Elachi took a hard stance, dismissing the demonstrators and even suggesting that those unhappy with the country should leave.

But fate has a way of shifting perspectives, and in the wake of her son’s tragic passing, the MP is now extending a heartfelt plea for compassion.

On Friday, March 28, during the requiem service for her late son, Elvis Murakana, Elachi spoke candidly about the independent and often silent struggles of today’s youth.

Murakana, a promising Business Studies student at Africa Nazarene University, lost his life after a devastating road accident.

“I want to talk to parents about our children today. We have a generation that believes they can sort out their own problems. They will go to great lengths to help each other, without ever informing their parents, and only tell us when things spiral out of control,” Elachi said, her voice heavy with emotion.

She recounted the heartbreaking final moments of her son’s life. A dedicated friend, Murakana received a late-night call to assist someone in need.

He rushed to help but, on his way back home, suffered a tyre burst. While trying to regain control using emergency brakes, the vehicle veered off course, leading to severe brain injuries.

After a courageous battle in the ICU, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, March 25.

Elachi, who previously challenged Gen Z’s defiance, now finds herself at the forefront of advocating for them.

“We, as mothers and parents today, let us pray for this generation. It is a very tough generation that needs a lot of prayers,” she urged.
