The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed the arrest of Henry Mwasaru, the Head of Human Resource and Administration at the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA).
The arrest follows investigations into alleged corruption involving a KES 40,539,760 tender for staff medical insurance
According to the EACC, Mwasaru was apprehended after evidence linked him to irregularities in the procurement process for the medical insurance contract.
The anti-corruption body revealed that the tender, which was meant to provide comprehensive medical coverage for KMA staff, may have been awarded in breach of public procurement laws.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mwasaru played a key role in influencing the tendering process to favour specific bidders.
The EACC further noted that the procurement discrepancies not only violated established guidelines but also posed a significant risk of financial loss to the government.
Mwasaru is currently being held at an undisclosed police station as the commission gathers more evidence and prepares to press formal charges.
He is expected to face accusations including abuse of office, willful failure to comply with procurement laws, and possible embezzlement of public funds.
The EACC emphasised its commitment to holding public officers accountable and ensuring transparency in the management of public resources.
“We are determined to root out corruption and restore public trust in institutions by ensuring that those implicated in malpractices are prosecuted,” an EACC spokesperson said.
This arrest highlights the ongoing crackdown on corruption in government agencies, with KMA joining the growing list of institutions under scrutiny.
The case underscores the need for stricter oversight and adherence to procurement regulations to safeguard public funds.
Further updates on Mwasaru’s case are expected as the investigation progresses.
