The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has this afternoon found itself on the receiving end from Kenyans on social media, especially X where it had urged Kenyans and good Samaritans to help in the arrest of a man believed to be the main suspect in the cold-blood murder of Rita Waeni a former JKUAT student months ago.
The development comes barely 2 days after online blogger Cyprian Nyakundi via his socials posted a CCTV footage that captured the late Rita Waeni approaching a building that is believed to be where she was murdered.
Yesterday, Nyakundi cried out that the DCI and other relevant authorities appear to have slept on their jobs or, they don’t value following up on Rita Waeni’s murder. This is after the DCI HQs reportedly failed to follow up the case.
Responding to the development, Kenyans have wondered why the DCI is seeking their help to arrest the prime suspect whereas it is within its constitutional mandate to arrest criminals with a section of Kenyans proposing that the DCI should be disbanded and every one sent home.
Before her tragic death, the third-year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology was staying with her aunt at Syokimau in  Nairobi.
“She left the home at 3 pm on January 13, 2024, never to return alive,” DCI said.
DCI has since obtained CCTV footage of the man walking with Waeni towards a room where she was found dead in Roysambu.
According to DCI, elaborate forensic analyses have so far been done by the investigating team, capturing the deceased’s last moments and linking probable suspects to her murder.
“Further, detailed statements by persons of interest have been recorded and more data sourced from digital platforms to ensure that all leads to Rita’s killer(s) are utilized,” DCI said.
