Police have arrested a suspect in Kawangware, Nairobi, after recovering 12 electricity meters believed to have been stolen during an intelligence-led operation targeting the theft of Kenya Power equipment.

The suspect, identified as Clinton Amuma, was arrested at his residence in Kawangware Stage 56 following intelligence linking him to the theft of electricity meters. Officers searched his house and found 12 meters suspected to have been stolen.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was conducted as part of efforts to identify and arrest individuals involved in the theft and illegal trade of electricity meters and other equipment belonging to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

Amuma remains in police custody as officers complete the necessary procedures ahead of his arraignment in court. The police have not provided further details about when the meters were stolen or the locations from which they were taken.

The 12 recovered meters have been secured as exhibits to support the ongoing investigation.

Kenya Power personnel have also joined the detectives to help establish the origin of the equipment and provide technical assistance as the case progresses.

The involvement of Kenya Power is expected to help investigators determine whether the recovered meters belong to the utility company and establish how they may have ended up at the suspect’s residence.

Electricity meter theft is a concern for power distribution operations because the equipment is used to measure electricity consumption in homes and businesses. The illegal handling or sale of such equipment can interfere with the proper management of electricity connections and complicate efforts to provide reliable services to customers.

The DCI said it was working closely with Kenya Power to pursue individuals involved in the theft of electricity meters and the illegal trade in the company’s equipment.

The two agencies are seeking to identify those involved in the suspected criminal network and establish whether other people may have participated in the theft and distribution of the recovered items.

Investigators are expected to use the recovered meters and information gathered during the operation to advance the case and determine whether the suspect is connected to other incidents involving stolen electricity equipment.

The arrest comes as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to combat the theft of public and privately owned infrastructure, including equipment used in the supply of essential services.

The DCI has maintained that it will continue working with Kenya Power to investigate such cases, disrupt networks involved in the illegal trade and bring those found responsible before the courts.

Amuma is expected to be presented in court after police processing is completed.
