The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has faulted the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) for failing to inform authorities ahead of a high-profile church event that turned chaotic in Mwiki on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
In a strongly-worded statement released Monday evening, the DCI accused the church of neglecting to notify police about the presence of political dignitaries, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, at the service.
As a result, no security arrangements were put in

place, leaving the event vulnerable to infiltration.
“The Mwiki police command confirmed that there was no formal communication from the church regarding the planned attendance of political figures. Consequently, no security measures were taken to safeguard the congregation,” read part of the DCI statement.
The chaos saw suspected goons storm the church compound, disrupting the service and clashing with Gachagua’s security detail.
According to investigators, over 100 motorcycles arrived at the scene, carrying individuals believed to have been mobilized to interfere with the event.
Gunshots rang out in the middle of the service, prompting officers from the nearby Mwiki Police Station to intervene. The attackers fled, abandoning 10 motorcycles, which were later confiscated and are being held as part of the ongoing probe.

In a dramatic response during the church service, Gachagua pointed fingers at President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, accusing them of orchestrating the attacks as part of a broader political vendetta.
“You sent goons to Limuru, to Nyeri, and now to church. You have reached a new low,” Gachagua declared, referencing recent disruptions at his events.
The DCI confirmed that gunshots heard during the chaos were fired by Gachagua’s official security personnel as a protective measure. They have since launched investigations to determine the motive and those behind the attack.
The agency has also issued a stern warning to the public against inciting violence during religious or community functions, urging organizers to always coordinate with law enforcement ahead of major gatherings.
