Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has found himself under public scrutiny after representing the police officers accused of killing the innocent Baby Pendo in 2017.

His involvement in the case, which is now set to be heard at the Court of Appeal, has raised questions about his moral compass and integrity, especially considering his previous vocal stance on justice and accountability in the Kenyan legal system.

Havi, known for his often uncompromising advocacy for legal reforms and human rights, is now defending the very officers accused of murdering a defenseless infant, a crime that shook the nation.

The Court of Appeal is set to deliberate on an application to stay the High Court proceedings on February 26th, with the case being prioritized over others due to its high profile.

However, the decision to give this matter special accommodation has led to concerns about potential delays in justice, and many are questioning the motivations behind the decision.

Nelson Amenya, a prominent social commentator, expressed his disbelief at Havi’s role in defending the accused officers, calling it the “highest form of hypocrisy.”

In a post on social media, Amenya condemned Havi’s actions, questioning how someone who has previously fought so fiercely for justice in the Supreme Court can now turn around to represent those implicated in the death of an innocent child.

“How can you fight the Supreme Court and yet come back again to defend people who killed an innocent baby?” Amenya asked. “You have no moral compass, just interests.”

Havi’s response to these criticisms has been brash, telling detractors to “not be idiots” and stating that he only represents clients who instruct him, rather than acting for personal gain.

This dismissive attitude towards the public’s concerns has only fueled the debate about his ethical standards.

While the legal proceedings continue, one thing is certain: Havi’s involvement in the Baby Pendo case has sparked a fiery debate over justice, accountability, and the price of legal representation.

Many are left wondering if the pursuit of personal interest has trumped the fight for the truth and justice for Baby Pendo.
