In a recent interview with Mwelekeo TV, Nevnina, the widow of the late Albert Ojwang, revealed how promises made by prominent politicians after her husband’s death have remained unfulfilled nearly a year later.

Speaking candidly about her struggles, she said many leaders assured her of support during one of the most difficult periods of her life, only to go silent after the public attention surrounding the case faded away.

Nevnina’s remarks brought renewed attention to the tragic death of Albert Ojwang, a teacher and blogger from Kakoth village in Homa Bay County.

Albert was arrested from his home in June 2025 following allegations linked to a social media post. After being taken to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, he died the following day under circumstances that sparked widespread public concern and calls for accountability.

For Nevnina, the loss was devastating. She suddenly found herself facing life without the man she had built her future around.

Beyond the grief, she also had to take on the responsibility of raising their young child alone. She recalled how difficult it was to come to terms with the reality that Albert would never return home and that the plans they had made together would remain unfinished.

In the days and weeks after Albert’s death, several leaders publicly expressed sympathy and pledged support to the family.

According to Nevnina, these commitments initially gave her hope that she would not have to face the challenges ahead on her own. She believed the promises would help her rebuild her life and secure a stable future for her child.

Among those who offered assistance was Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who reportedly promised to help her secure employment after completing her studies. Nevnina also said there were assurances regarding housing in Nairobi and the purchase of a plot of land for the family in Lida Trading Centre.

At the time, these commitments appeared to offer a path forward amid uncertainty.

The family also received financial assistance from President William Ruto during Albert’s burial preparations.

Nevnina acknowledged that support and expressed appreciation for it. However, she noted that after the funeral and the public statements of solidarity, many of the people who had promised to stand with the family gradually disappeared from their lives.

During the interview, she expressed disappointment that the promises she had relied on never materialised.

The job opportunity she was told would come never arrived. The housing support and land allocation also failed to happen. According to her, those who once spoke passionately about helping the family no longer communicate or provide updates.

As a result, life has remained difficult. Nevnina described facing financial struggles while trying to provide for her child.

There have been periods when meeting basic needs became a challenge. The emotional burden has also remained heavy, as she continues to cope with the trauma of losing her husband so suddenly.

She said memories of Albert remain fresh in her mind. Their conversations, dreams and plans for the future are things she still thinks about regularly. Watching their child grow up without a father has only deepened the pain of the loss.

Despite the hardships, she has tried to honour Albert’s memory and uphold family traditions, even when finances have been strained.

One of the statements that stood out during the interview was her claim that leaders who had publicly pledged support eventually stopped communicating with the family.

According to Nevnina, the promises brought comfort at a time when she felt overwhelmed by grief and uncertainty. However, the lack of follow-through has left her feeling disappointed and abandoned.

Despite everything she has gone through, Nevnina said she remains focused on her child and on seeking justice for her husband.

She hopes the ongoing legal process will eventually provide answers about what happened to Albert and hold those responsible accountable. While the emotional and financial challenges continue, she says giving up is not an option.

Her story serves as a reminder that behind public tragedies are families who continue to live with the consequences long after media attention fades.

Through her appearance on Mwelekeo TV, Nevnina sought to bring attention back to the reality she faces every day, urging leaders to match their words with action and reminding the public that her family’s search for support, truth and justice is still ongoing.
