Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing tough questions following claims that missing people are being secretly cremated at the Kariokor Crematorium.
The allegations, first shared by blogger Maverick Aoko on X (formerly Twitter), have left many Kenyans worried and calling for answers.
Through her X account on February 5, Aoko asked, “Sakaja on whose orders are you cremating abducted comrades at Kariokor?”
She further claimed that bodies of some missing individuals are being dumped at City Mortuary, while those who remain unidentified are being cremated.
The allegations have triggered strong reactions online. A popular X account, Sol Tech, posted, “Sakaja has some explaining to do. People are disappearing, and now we hear about secret cremations? This is bigger than Nairobi. It’s about trust.”
The post also pointed out that Kariokor Crematorium, which was originally built during the colonial era for British soldiers, is now allegedly being misused.
These concerns come at a time when cases of missing persons are on the rise in Nairobi. One such case is that of 19-year-old Elvis Munene, an IT intern at Nairobi County.
Munene disappeared on January 29 under unclear circumstances. His last phone signal was traced near the Mwalimu Co-Operative building a day earlier, though his family insists they last spoke to him on January 29.
His mother, Marion Karambu, said she sent him transport money that evening, but he never made it home. Records at City Hall show he reported to work that morning but never left.
With these shocking claims now in the public eye, families of the missing and human rights activists are demanding transparency from Governor Sakaja and the authorities.
So far, the Nairobi County government has remained silent, leaving many wondering what really happens at Kariokor Crematorium.
For now, all eyes are on Sakaja to provide the much-needed answers.
