A businesswoman has accused unnamed officials of issuing death threats over a failed multi-million-shilling deal linked to President William Ruto.

In court papers filed yesterday, Ms Wachuka claimed the threats began after she demanded payment for developing software meant to enhance the President’s public image.

She cited a specific threat sent at 9:45 am on July 26. The email, with the subject line “Jackie Maina, beware, we will kill you,” read: “We know what you are planning, and trust me, we will kill you soon. You are angry because you were dumped, now you want to destroy our country? We are putting you on notice. Move on.”

Wachuka said these messages left her living in constant fear, calling them an attempt to silence her.

The disputed contract involved creating software to manage the President’s public relations by predicting media coverage, monitoring sentiment, and improving communication.

Valued at KSh 130 million, the project stalled after alleged non-payment, forcing Wachuka to incur heavy losses by sub-contracting a US-based firm.

Wachuka told the court that despite reaching out to Eric Ngeno, Ruto’s speechwriter, she received no response. She also refrained from forwarding the threatening messages to him or other officials, citing distrust.

She described the threats as part of an intimidation campaign, accusing officials of trying to suppress her claims.

In addition to financial compensation, Wachuka is now seeking protection from those behind the threats.

This case has sparked public debate, with critics raising concerns about the safety of individuals engaging in government projects and the integrity of such contracts.
