Mambo Mseto has learned that Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was appointed to head the African Union Election Observation Mission for South Africa in May 2024. This news, shared by Pauline Njoroge on X yesterday, has sparked mixed reactions across the country leaving Kenyans divided.
For some Kenyans, this appointment is a strategic move that could influence the upcoming AU elections. They believe that Kenyatta’s conduct as an election observer could sway other African nations to support Raila Odinga’s bid to replace Chad’s Moussa Faki as the next AU chair.
However, not everyone shares this sentiment. A section of the public argues that Kenyatta’s new role and his conduct have no bearing on Odinga’s candidature. They maintain that the AU chairmanship will be determined by individual merits and not influenced by external factors.
Meanwhile, ODM leader Hon. Raila Odinga and President William Ruto are expected to start joint tours in African states to campaign for the AU seat. Kenya and East African states are banking on Odinga’s candidacy, adding another layer of intrigue to the political landscape.
Nevertheless, it is only time will tell what impact, if any, this development will have on the much-anticipated AU elections next year. One thing is certain though, the road to the AU chairmanship just got a lot more interesting.
Back in Kenya, a group of young MPs such as Babu Owino of Embakasi East, and Gathoni Wamuchomba of Githunguri have renewed their push to have the Ruto Govt take responsibility for the loss of lives as a result of floods, adding that someone slept on his job somewhere. They are questioning how a dam in Mai Mahiu was built by a private developer without the knowledge of the relevant authorities in the govt.
