President William Ruto’s arrival at Sagana State Lounge in Kirinyaga County this evening has left many political observers talking not because of pomp and excitement, but due to the striking contrast to his previous visits to the Mt. Kenya region.

Unlike 2022, when his mere presence would bring towns to a standstill, this time, only a handful of curious onlookers captured photos as he arrived.

The energy, the enthusiasm, and the overwhelming public embrace that once defined Ruto’s reception in the region were conspicuously absent.

Even more intriguing was his route. Traditionally, a leader of his stature would begin such a high-stakes regional tour from political hotspots like Githurai, Kenol, or Makutano before proceeding to Sagana.

However, this time, Ruto quietly snaked through those towns without the usual fanfare, with only a video of his arrival at Sagana making rounds online.

Political analysts argue that this subdued reception reflects growing unease in the Mt. Kenya region.

Several factors may explain the shift: the unceremonious ouster of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the continued targeting and sacking of key Mt. Kenya leaders from government positions, the biting economy, and what many residents see as anti-people policies.

From heavy taxation to the skyrocketing cost of living, frustrations are mounting, and the political goodwill that once fueled Ruto’s rise in the region appears to be eroding.

As the President kicks off his five-day tour, the big question remains: Can he rekindle the passion Mt. Kenya once had for him, or will the numbers—and the mood—continue to speak for themselves?

The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Ruto can reclaim the trust of a region that played a pivotal role in his election victory.
