President William Ruto has addressed the misunderstanding surrounding his opposition to the 2018 handshake deal between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

During his tour of the Coastal region on Saturday, Ruto explained that his objection was not against reconciliation but the exclusionary approach taken by Kenyatta.

Ruto stated that Kenyatta’s failure to include all allies of Raila Odinga in the Cabinet created political confusion and hindered effective governance.

He believes that if Kenyatta had incorporated Odinga’s allies, any failures of the government could have been attributed to specific individuals rather than casting a blanket condemnation over the entire administration.

The President expressed confidence in the new Cabinet, which includes experts like Hassan Joho, John Mbadi, and Opiyo Wandayi. He believes this team will deliver significant results before the 2027 general election.

“Had we had a more inclusive approach back then, the political landscape might have been less tumultuous,” Ruto remarked, highlighting the importance of unity and comprehensive representation in governance.

The decision to invite ODM Party leader Raila Odinga’s allies into the government has sparked speculation about Ruto’s motives. Critics suggest that this move might be an attempt to consolidate power and potentially sideline other political factions. There are growing concerns that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the Mt. Kenya region could be marginalized before and after the upcoming 2027 polls.

Ruto’s recent comments and actions underscore his belief in a more inclusive government, but they also raise questions about the future political landscape. As the nation heads toward the next general election, the dynamics within the ruling coalition and the broader political arena will be closely watched.

The President remains optimistic that the inclusion of Odinga’s allies will lead to a more effective and unified government, capable of addressing the country’s challenges and delivering on its promises.
