The Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has criticised Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja over the recent demolitions in Woodley Estate, which left dozens of families homeless.
In a statement issued by acting ODM leader Anyang’ Nyong’o, the party condemned the midnight demolitions as “inhumane and shocking.”
Nyong’o expressed disappointment with the handling of the process, arguing that a more organised and humane approach could have been adopted.
“The demolitions were executed in a colonial manner, disregarding the rights and dignity of the affected families,” said Nyong’o, who also serves as Kisumu Governor.
The demolitions, conducted on Monday night, targeted 43 county-owned houses as part of a larger plan to transform the 100-acre estate into a modern residential area with 1,975 housing units.
Despite acknowledging the need for affordable housing, ODM questioned the decision to evict families without providing alternative accommodations in advance.
Davidson Ngibuini, the area MCA, defended the county government, claiming the evictions followed legal procedures. He reiterated that affected residents had been given a three-month notice.
However, public outcry has persisted, with many accusing the county government of prioritising development over people’s welfare.
Governor Sakaja has attempted to mitigate the backlash by announcing compensation of KSh900,000 for the displaced tenants to cover rent while the new housing units are under construction.
Additionally, he assured that the evicted families would receive allotment letters guaranteeing ownership of units in the upgraded estate.
The demolitions have reignited long-standing tensions between the county government and Woodley residents, who have consistently advocated for their homes to be purchased outright rather than demolished.
With public pressure mounting, ODM’s criticism adds to the political heat on Sakaja’s administration, which now faces scrutiny over its approach to resolving Nairobi’s housing crisis.
