Panic gripped motorists and pedestrians along Thika Road on Tuesday afternoon as a group of rowdy youth went on a looting spree, attacking vehicles and businesses near the National Youth Service (NYS) headquarters.

Videos circulating on social media show the mob storming matatus, snatching valuables from commuters, and breaking into private cars stuck in traffic.

Witnesses say the group, allegedly coming from a political rally attended by President William Ruto in Mathare, also targeted supermarkets and fast-food outlets, stealing goods in broad daylight.

Eyewitnesses report that the youth forcefully entered several businesses, prompting store owners to close early for safety.

One of the most affected areas was a local supermarket, where shelves were ransacked.

“People from William Ruto’s meeting at Mathare are currently robbing people at Naivas… Some have stolen slaughtered chicken from fast foods along the road,” one X user posted.

Some social media users expressed frustration at the police, who were reportedly present but did not intervene.

“Some unruly youths have been attacking private vehicles along Thika Road and snatching phones from unsuspecting individuals, and police are just watching,” wrote another user.

Despite the chaos, authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the incident. Meanwhile, Kenyans on social media have condemned the rising insecurity and urged the police to restore order.

“I can’t believe this is happening in broad daylight. Where are the police?” another concerned citizen questioned.

Traffic along Thika Road was heavily affected, with motorists advised to seek alternative routes as the situation remained tense.
