Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has warned that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s endorsement for a second term by ODM leader Raila Odinga may not necessarily serve Raila’s best interests.

Babu expressed doubts about Sakaja’s loyalty to Raila, suggesting that the governor has never truly supported the ODM leader.

His remarks come just days after Raila publicly declared his backing for Sakaja’s re-election.

“Sakaja being Baba’s son might not mean well for the same dad,” Babu cautioned.

He argued that if Raila had a candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position whom President William Ruto also supported, Sakaja would likely campaign for Ruto’s candidate rather than Raila’s.

Babu’s comments suggest that Sakaja’s allegiance lies elsewhere, despite Raila’s endorsement.

He implied that the governor’s past actions indicate a lack of genuine commitment to Raila’s political course.

“I love Baba, he is my leader. I am really praying that Baba wins the AU chairperson because he deserves this seat, he has sacrificed a lot,” Babu stated.

The Embakasi East legislator’s remarks come at a time when Raila is pushing for the AU chairmanship, a move that has received backing from President Ruto and other leaders.

However, Babu’s concerns hint at internal party divisions, with some ODM members questioning Sakaja’s loyalty.

His cautionary message to Raila underscores the ongoing political realignments as the country gears up for the next election cycle.

While Raila’s endorsement carries significant political weight, Babu’s warning suggests that ODM should tread carefully in supporting leaders whose dedication to the party remains uncertain.

It remains to be seen how Raila and Sakaja will respond to Babu’s remarks, but the debate over political loyalty within ODM appears far from over.
