United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala has denied reports of his resignation amidst internal party conflicts.

In a statement shared on X, Malala dismissed the speculation as mere propaganda and urged his supporters and UDA members to disregard the rumors.

He reaffirmed his position as the party’s Secretary General, emphasizing the party’s stability and commitment to helping President William Ruto achieve the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

“Ignore propaganda. The party is stable and focused on helping President @WilliamsRuto achieve his agenda for Kenya. Chama iko Imara,” Malala wrote.

A letter dated Tuesday, July 30, 2024, falsely claimed that Malala had resigned from his position as Secretary General with immediate effect. The letter cited the ongoing party disputes and the broader political landscape as reasons for his alleged departure.

“This decision comes after a period of deep personal reflection and consideration of the current state of our party and the broader political landscape. The political harlotry that has unfolded, including the recent alignment of Raila Odinga with the government through unconventional means, has created an environment of instability and disillusionment. This move, which undermines the democratic process and the principles we stand for, has deeply disturbed me,” the letter read.

The letter also claimed Malala would continue to support democratic values and good governance, despite stepping down. “As I step down, I remain committed to supporting the values of democracy and good governance. I will continue to advocate for the issues that matter most to our nation and work towards a more united and effective political landscape.”

On the same day, a faction within the UDA, led by lawyer Joe Khalende, called for Malala’s removal as Secretary General. They accused him of sabotaging the party’s progress and supporting agendas that contradict the ruling party.

“Malala is supporting the TAWE movement and agendas which contradict the ruling party. He has abdicated his role and duty as the SG of the ruling party; he has joined our opponents,” Khalende said. “I, Joe Khalende, will be taking over as the SG of the UDA party. He has gone against our party leader and is at the forefront against the formation of a broad-based government. I am here to confirm that he is no longer the SG of the UDA party.”
