Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has strongly condemned Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho for attending and addressing a political rally organized by President William Ruto in Kieni, Nyeri County.

Through a media statement via her X handle, Odhiambo criticized the IG’s participation, arguing that it undermines the neutrality of the National Police Service.

“The Inspector-General swore an oath to serve all Kenyans impartially, not to be a political tool for any administration. His presence and remarks at a partisan event are not just inappropriate but unconstitutional,” she stated.

Odhiambo cited Article 245 of the Constitution, which grants the IG independent command over the police service and bars any form of political interference.

She also referenced the Leadership and Integrity Act, which expressly prohibits state officers from engaging in political activities that compromise their neutrality.

“Kanja’s actions erode public confidence in the police. This is a blatant violation of the law, and he must be held accountable,” she asserted.

The controversy stems from the IG’s remarks at the rally, where he appeared to endorse the President’s administration. Critics argue that this compromises his ability to oversee law enforcement fairly, especially in the lead-up to future elections.

The LSK President warned that failure to uphold the Constitution could set a dangerous precedent. She called on Parliament and relevant oversight bodies to take immediate action, including summoning the IG to explain his conduct.

“We cannot allow the police service to be weaponized for political gain. Kenyans deserve institutions that serve them, not political interests,” Odhiambo emphasized.

Her remarks have sparked widespread debate, with civil society groups and opposition leaders joining in to demand accountability. Meanwhile, the National Police Service has yet to respond to the allegations.

This latest development raises fresh concerns about the delicate balance between politics and law enforcement in Kenya, with many urging the IG to reaffirm his commitment to impartiality or step down.
