Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i flew out of the country to the United Kingdom without even the knowledge of President William Ruto. This is according to Kisii senator Richard Onyonka, one of the prominent people aggrieved by the government’s war declaration on the former CS.
He claims that not even security agencies knew that he was not in the country and were caught by surprise on realizing he was in the United Kingdom.
Onyonka says that this is because the government totally withdrew his security detail, and has as a result been unable to monitor his movements.
He has made the remarks while disagreeing with reports that the security detail was only reduced, pointing out that it was totally withdrawn.
“The police IG had said that he scaled down Matiang’i’s security but Matiang’i says all his security was taken and I seem to believe him because that is why he was able to travel out of the country and they don’t even know,” he said on Citizen TV on Monday.
Matiang’i has been in trouble since February, with Ruto’s takeover appearing to be making life hard for him, thanks to the bad blood between them.
For instance, the police raided his house and carted away CCTV camera data last month, a week after another alleged encirclement of his house, which the government has denied.
He is also now wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for questioning, with there being reports that the sources of his wealth, which he made while in the cabinet, are as well being probed.
Onyonka has warned against this, cautioning that harassing him is making Ruto and his administration look bad.
“I want to really take it to William Ruto and ask him that he must be very careful with how he handles the Matiang’i story,” he said.
