The head of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Dr. Evanson Kamuri, is deep in trouble after being linked to a huge corruption scandal.

A court has frozen Sh4 million found in a bank account belonging to a woman who says she has never even met him.

The woman, Jacqueline Kavete Mbuli, told the court she does not know how the money got into her account. She even asked the bank to take the money back, but the bank refused.

Now, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) believes the cash could be linked to dirty deals involving tenders worth over Sh634 million.

Dr. Kamuri tried to convince the court that the money was from his salary and his side job as a skin doctor. However, the judge did not believe him.

High Court Judge Lucy Njuguna said the money must remain frozen until investigators find out the full truth.

Kamuri said the freezing of the money has made life hard for him and his family. He claimed he cannot pay school fees for his children or keep up with his professional fees.

But the judge ruled that protecting public money was more important than Kamuri’s personal problems.

The EACC told the court that they still have more investigations to complete. They also want Kamuri to explain how he owns so much compared to his known income.

At the same time, the court lifted another freeze order on one of Kamuri’s other bank accounts holding Sh1.1 million. But the case is far from over.

This scandal paints a very bad picture of KNH, a hospital where ordinary Kenyans struggle daily to get basic treatment.

Many patients sleep on floors, lack medicine, and wait for hours for care  while the boss is busy dealing with millions of shillings he cannot even explain.
