During President William Ruto’s rally in Homa Bay, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed took direct aim at Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, challenging his recent self-proclamation as the official opposition leader.
Junet’s sharp remarks came in response to Kalonzo’s declaration, which followed ODM Party leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat.

“You can’t be our leader,” Junet fired back, addressing Kalonzo’s assertion. He argued that Kalonzo’s move was premature and inappropriate, insisting that leadership within the opposition must be earned, not self-appointed.
Junet made it clear that Kalonzo’s attempt to install himself as the opposition leader was not welcomed by all within the opposition ranks.
The vocal MP emphasized that the leadership of the opposition should remain aligned with the principles and structures established under Raila’s guidance. He suggested that Kalonzo’s actions were an overreach, aimed more at filling a perceived power vacuum than genuinely representing the opposition’s interests.
“Leadership in opposition is about more than just stepping into someone else’s shoes,” Junet continued, signaling that Kalonzo’s self-appointment did not automatically grant him the authority or legitimacy to lead. His remarks were a clear message that the ODM faction, which Junet represents, does not recognize Kalonzo’s new role.
Junet’s comments highlighted the ongoing power struggle within the opposition, particularly as key figures position themselves for influence in the post-Raila era.
The rally, meant to bolster President Ruto’s support, instead became a platform for deepening the rift between opposition leaders, with Junet publicly challenging Kalonzo’s bid for leadership.
