Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome. Speaking in Bomet County, Cheruiyot expressed regret that the IG was absent as bandits continued to terrorize residents of Kerio Valley. He criticized Koome for taking a backseat in national security matters since his appointment.
The call for Koome’s resignation was made during a Sunday service at AGC Church in Bomet, attended by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. Cheruiyot stated, “If he is overwhelmed by the job, let him resign and we bring new people who can ensure our people are safe.”
Cheruiyot also addressed PCS Mudavadi, requesting the issue be discussed at the next cabinet meeting. He urged Koome to leave Jogoo House and address the ongoing violence in Kerio Valley.
The Kericho senator expressed frustration at complaints directed at Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki about the rising banditry cases in the North Rift. He emphasized that the IG’s office is independent and should be the one addressing insecurity in the country.
Cheruiyot’s remarks came three days after IG Koome briefed President William Ruto on measures being taken to combat insecurity in the North Rift. The meeting was also attended by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, his Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, and IG Koome’s deputies.
Cheruiyot remarked that since IG Koome was appointed, he had taken a backseat in matters of national security.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) elected senator called for the resignation of IG Koome during a Sunday service at AGC Church in Bomet where Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi was also in attendance.
“Tell him to get out of Jogoo House, and go to Kerio Valley where our brothers and sisters are being murdered every day,” Cheruiyot told Musalia.
