Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is once again in the spotlight over the mysterious disappearance of millions meant for the county’s school feeding programme, Dishi na County.

According to the Nation on February 26, Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu has raised serious concerns about Sh145,725,000 donated by the French Embassy in Kenya to support the programme.

According to the 2023/2024 audit report, her office cannot trace how this money was used.

The funds were sent directly to Food for Education, a non-profit organisation working with the county to feed schoolchildren.

However, the county government has failed to account for the money.

“The audit could not ascertain the accountability for these funds.

In addition, there were no established measures by the County Executive regarding the management of the donations received,” the report states.

Shockingly, the report also reveals that there is no official agreement or memorandum of understanding between the county and Food for Education.

The county was paying the company Sh25 per plate for meals, yet parents were also required to pay Sh5 per plate.

This means the organisation was receiving Sh30 per plate instead of the agreed Sh25. Where did the extra money go?

This is not the first time concerns have been raised.

Last year, County Health CEC Susan Silantoi and Food for Education CEO Wawira Njiru appeared before the County Health Committee but failed to explain how donations were handled.

To date, there is still no clear policy framework to regulate the programme.

Meanwhile, another storm is brewing in the Nairobi County Government.

Garbage collectors are clashing with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) over electricity disconnections in the city’s waste management sector.

Nairobi’s garbage problem is worsening, yet county officials appear more interested in political games than solutions.

With Sh1.7 billion already allocated to Dishi na County in 2023/2024 and an additional Sh400 million recently approved, Nairobians are left wondering who else is eating? Governor Sakaja has some serious explaining to do.
