Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly denied claims that Mt. Kenya is withdrawing its support for President William Ruto and his administration.
Addressing a crowd during a roadside rally in Kirinyaga County on Saturday, Gachagua fired back at local leaders who have threatened to leave the Kenya Kwanza coalition due to alleged dissatisfaction.
“This is our government,” Gachagua declared, reminding the audience of the region’s overwhelming support for Ruto in the last election.
“We woke up early and invested in President William Ruto’s administration. I urge leaders to avoid making statements that could confuse the public. Such nonsense should stay in WhatsApp groups. When you address Kenyans publicly, you must do so appropriately.”
The Deputy President’s remarks come amid a development tour of Mt. Kenya by President Ruto and his deputy, where they launched various projects aimed at addressing concerns within the region’s vote bloc. Over the past two days, they have been working to calm tensions in a region that has expressed growing dissatisfaction with the government it heavily supported.
On Friday, President Ruto was in Murang’a, where he unveiled several key infrastructure projects, including the 31km Mitarakwa-Ha Paulo-Mbari Ya Hiti-Gitiri-Kianjogu-Kahithe-Gatuya Road, which is expected to boost access to markets for farm products in the county. The president also inspected the Kambirwa Fresh Produce Market and launched the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity project in Marewa.
Meanwhile, Gachagua continues to face speculation about an impeachment motion allegedly being lined up against him. In recent weeks, several MPs believed to be his allies have been arrested on suspicion of funding anti-government protests, fueling further political intrigue around the Deputy President.
