Investigations into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have taken a different turn following the arrest of a board member from the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA). The suspect was taken into custody in Nakuru and is believed to have paid Sh850,000 to the individuals responsible for the MP’s death.

According to reports, the suspect promised the killers that they would not be arrested, claiming that the planners of the murder were well-connected officials.

Detectives recovered a pistol suspected to have been used in the murder of the MP during a major police operation in Chokaa, Kayole.

The case is drawing attention for its potential political undertones. The murder is now being linked to the growing political rivalry between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), with both parties positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election. There are claims that the arrested LBDA board member has close ties with a powerful figure in the Office of the President. It is said that this individual was in frequent communication with the suspect on the day that Charles Ong’ondo Were was killed, raising speculations about the political motives behind the crime.

The authorities’ ballistics analysis revealed that one of the pistols found had been used in other criminal activities, which raises further concerns about the level of planning and execution involved in the murder.

The ongoing investigation has raised more questions than answers, with many speculating that the political dealings surrounding the ODM and UDA parties may have played a role in the tragic event.
