Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has claimed that President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027 is now almost certain, following a recent meeting with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
On Friday, August 1, Uhuru surprised many Kenyans when he appeared at a peace consultative meeting also attended by President Ruto.
The event was part of discussions on the Democratic Republic of Congo peace process, where Uhuru serves as Kenya’s envoy.
While it was an official gathering, the presence of both leaders at the same event has caused a stir across the political divide.
Many Kenyans were left wondering whether this was a sign that the frosty relationship between Ruto and Uhuru was beginning to thaw.
The two have had a rocky political relationship, especially after the fallout that followed the 2017 general election and the handshake between Uhuru and Raila Odinga.
Since then, there has been visible tension between them, which continued even after Ruto became president. For the first time in years, they were seen sharing the same space calmly, sparking speculation on whether some kind of political deal could be in the works.
Senator Cherargei quickly took to his X account to interpret the moment as more than just a coincidence. He said the meeting was upsetting some people because it hinted at a more inclusive and united Kenya, something he claimed many in the opposition do not want.
According to him, Uhuru’s appearance at State House with Ruto should be seen as a sign that the political environment is shifting in Ruto’s favor.
He went as far as declaring that Ruto’s re-election is now certain and even compared the upcoming 2027 election to a coronation, meaning that there will be no serious challenge.
Cherargei also used the moment to send a message to opposition figures like Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He advised them to stop wasting time preparing for 2027 because, in his words, their next real chance will come in 2032.
These statements have added fuel to the ongoing debate around the 2027 race, especially at a time when political temperatures are already rising.
Despite Cherargei’s excitement, it is still unclear whether Ruto and Uhuru spoke privately during the meeting. What is known is that they sat together during sessions attended by leaders from the East African Community, Southern African Development Community, and the African Union.
The meeting focused on how to improve cooperation among the three regional blocs and suggested merging their structures to better handle African peace and security matters.
