Nick Mararo has joined many Kenyans in mourning the lives of at least 16 learners who died following a tragic fire at Utumishi Academy.

In a heartfelt message shared after the incident, he expressed sympathy to the affected families, students, teachers, and the entire school community as they struggle to come to terms with the painful loss.

Mararo said no child should ever have to go through such a tragedy and no parent should receive news about the death of their child in such a heartbreaking manner. He described the incident as deeply painful and said the country stands with the families during this difficult time.

His message reflected the emotions many people have felt since news of the fire emerged.

While expressing sorrow, Mararo also raised concern about safety standards in schools. He questioned whether recommendations made after previous school fire tragedies were fully implemented.

According to him, past incidents had already led to discussions about improving school safety, emergency response systems, and preparedness in learning institutions.

He asked what became of those recommendations and whether enough had been done to protect learners.

Mararo noted that these questions may be uncomfortable, but they are necessary. He stressed the need for accountability and honest answers from those responsible for ensuring schools are safe for children.

He said it is important for leaders and institutions to take practical steps that can help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

His message ended with words of comfort to the Utumishi Academy community. Using the phrase “poleni sana,” he offered condolences and encouraged those affected to remain strong despite the pain they are facing.

Concerns about dormitory conditions, emergency exits, fire equipment, and response procedures continue to be raised as investigations into the incident go on.
